Chapter 4: Ask for the Room

Lacey recovered first, which was her gift.

"Let's all go inside," she said brightly. "It's late, everyone's tired, and we can sort the booking out in the morning."

"The house is closed," Wes said.

"Wes." She laughed. "It's me. I'm marrying your brother."

"Then you'll be family, and I'll let you in when you're family. Tonight the booking is void."

On the lake, a pontoon boat full of neighbors had cut its engine to drift closer.

I heard the clink of a bottle against a rail.

Josh stepped toward me.

"Nora, what's going on? Lacey said you wanted a quiet weekend at home. She said you told her to go without you."

"I never said that."

"She showed me a text."

"Josh," I said, "I want you to listen to the next few sentences, because I'm only going to say them once."

I had never started a sentence like that in my life.

My voice shook for the first word, and then it didn't.

"Lacey booked five seats on my points and removed mine last night. Meg told me this morning that they thought I'd guess it."

Meg's scarf slid off her hair.

"I canceled the house because I paid for it, six thousand two hundred dollars, my card, my name. Your fiancée and your friends sat at that gate and watched me stand there with my coffee."

"We didn't think it would be a big deal," Meg said.

"You made a chat called 'Lake, no N.'"
