Chapter 24: Three Plates and One More
Maisie turned twenty-three on a Sunday, in a kitchen that smelled like lemon and vanilla.
She had baked the cake herself, lopsided, with a layer of curd that had leaked down one side.
"It's beautiful," Cal said, from the stove.
"It's a disaster," Maisie said, glowing. "Thank you."
I set the table.
We had three plates, new ones, white stoneware that Maisie had bought with her first paycheck from the gallery.
She'd picked them out of a bin and carried them home in a bag, and she'd made me wash them twice before she was satisfied.
Cal pulled a chair out for her, and she sat in it carefully.
Her color was good.
The doctors said her numbers would be a work in progress for a year, and she had a pill organizer the size of a brick, but she had put on six pounds and she laughed more than she coughed.
"Candles," Cal said.
"Wait. I have to do something first."
She pushed back her chair, and walked down the hall to her room.
She came back with a single paper plate in her hand.
It was white, with a tiny stain of pink frosting on the rim, and a clown drawn on the back in crayon.
I stared.
"You drowned them all," I said.
"I kept one." She pulled a sheepish face. "Don't be mad. I had to save the clown."
"You said fourteen went down the drain."
"Thirteen. I miscounted."
She put the plate in the middle of the table, clown side down, so the clown was hidden.
"Shanna gets the first slice," she said. "On a real plate. And this one stays here, so everybody remembers."
