Chapter 16: The Terms of Return

The priest who married Aquas to Lucien walked into the forge-hall and asked him to come home.

His name was Ondel, and his hand was on both the paper that made Aquas and the paper that unmade him.

Ondel came down the gallery steps slowly, in grey robes that had not one speck of ash on them.

A gloved hand settled on the forge table between Aquas and Voss.

'Prince Aquas,' Ondel said. 'The moon court has come to take you back.'

Durn's hand moved toward her hammer. She stopped it.

'You are on Pluto's floor,' she said.

'I am here under the king's own seal,' Ondel said. 'Diplomatic immunity, Captain. You may not touch me, and you may not hold me.'

He let that sit in the hall.

Mossbeard made a low noise in his beard.

'Come home,' Ondel said to Aquas. 'Your father has reconsidered. Your place is restored. Your title is restored. The marriage to the dark prince can be set aside by the court that witnessed it.'

Aquas said nothing.

Behind him, Lucien did not move.

'Set aside,' Durn said. 'That is a pretty word for a thing done to a drugged boy.'

Ondel turned to her as if she had asked a fair question.

'The contract was valid,' he said. 'The law does not bend for sentiment.'

Durn looked at him for a long moment.

Then she turned the opened succession record on the table, slowly, until its countersignature page faced the nearest smiths.
