Chapter 23: A Place at the Forge
The barricade split down the middle, and Aerial's fighters were still shouting for Elder Voss to open the inner postern behind Durn's line.
Aquas caught the falling plank with his shoulder and shoved it back into place.
He took Lucien's good hand and pressed it flat over the bandage at his shoulder.
'Keep it there,' he said. 'Hard as you can.'
'Durn,' he called. 'Cover the barricade. I have him.'
Durn did not argue. She turned her axe back to the line.
Lucien's blood came through the wool, warm and steady under Aquas's palm.
The arrow shaft still stood out of the joint, black fletching shaking with every breath.
Durn knelt beside them and took hold of the shaft with both hands.
'Clean through the joint,' she said. 'Bleeding fast. He does not lift a weapon tonight.'
She cut the shaft free of his coat and tossed the fletching aside.
Lucien did not make a sound. His eyes stayed on Aquas the whole time.
