Chapter 24: The Blade He Surrendered
The fighter who had named Aquas Solaris still had his blade raised.
Behind Aquas, Lucien lay bleeding on the gate stone with no shadow to protect him.
Aquas stepped forward, into the gap the broken postern had left.
He held out his empty hand, palm up.
Every blade in the corridor pointed at him.
The fighter's eyes went to the sun-sigil in Aquas's other hand.
Gold wax still clung to the rim of it.
'The blade,' Aquas said. 'Give it to me.'
The fighter's mouth opened.
He thinks I want a trophy, Aquas thought. Let him.
Let him think it all the way to the hilt.
'You would take a sword from the man who named you,' the fighter said.
'I would.'
'A crown prince does not carry another man's steel.'
'Then I will carry it badly,' Aquas said.
The fighter looked at the gold wax on the sigil again.
He looked past Aquas, at the soldiers already past the barricade.
