They Drugged Me Into Darkness, Now I Am Its King novel · Chapter 25 of 32
Chapter 25: The Rite He Chose
The King of the moon court walked into Pluto's gate hall under dwarf guard.
He carried his crown in his hands.
Aquas drove Sarn's captured axe down into the stone at his feet.
The blade split the gate stone. Both lines heard it.
Aquas left the axe standing there.
'Keep the wounded behind the line,' he told Lucien.
Lucien did not argue. He leaned on the barricade and watched his father-in-law walk in.
The King stopped three paces from Aquas. His herald stopped behind him and would not look up.
'Clear the hall,' the King said. 'This is a family matter.'
Durn planted her axe head on the plank.
'No,' she said.
The King's mouth tightened. He had never been told no by a dwarf captain.
Aquas watched him file it away.
The King unwrapped a small silver bowl from a fold of oiled cloth.
It was the same cloth that had wrapped the succession record.
He set the bowl on the gate stone between them.
Aquas looked at the rim. There was a cut in the silver, curved and thin.
He pulled back his sleeve and laid his palm beside it.
