Chapter 10: Wrong Chat

Desmond slept on my living room couch that night, because I wouldn't let him drive.

By Monday morning he had gone to a motel by the highway, with a note on the coffee table that said only: I'll fix this.

I read it and put it in the recycling.

Kenzie came down to the kitchen at nine in one of my old college sweatshirts, with her hair in a tangle.

"Did I sleep through the apocalypse?"

"Only the second half," Libby said, and slid her a mug.

They'd stayed up until two, talking in the spare room.

It was the first time I'd heard Libby laugh in a week.

I was reading the attorney's email when the old tablet lit up on the counter.

It was still logged into the chat called Family Only (Not Sue), because I hadn't turned it off, and I was glad now that I hadn't.

A new message had appeared at 9:42.

It was from Rosalie.

All three of us leaned over the screen.

"C, she won't sign the letter. So the cottage is dead. Don't pay the yard loan on Wednesday. Let it go delinquent, and the bank can go after D and the house in Cambridge. We'll have the new place in Portland under my name by then. He'll have nothing and neither will she."

Under it was a second message from her.

"WRONG CHAT. Delete."

The first message disappeared.

The tablet showed a gray line where it had been.
