Chapter 3: Page Nine
At Hal's shop Melina learns page nine was a signed confession, and finds the Walk Again Gala where Elora will take her first steps live.
Hal had the shop lights on and a sandwich waiting when I came through the side door.
Brewster Machine is one bay on Cleveland's west side, with a lathe, two mills and a cot behind the parts shelves.
I had built the first prototype of every brace I owned on that lathe.
Hal had stood over my shoulder for all of them, complaining about my tolerances.
"Bologna," he said, and pushed the plate at me. "Don't make a face. It's one in the morning."
"I'm not making a face."
"You're making the face." He pulled his reading glasses down from his forehead.
"Eat first," he said. "Then tell me why your family's page is calling you a criminal."
So I ate, and then I played him the recording.
He listened to all of it standing up, with his big hands flat on the workbench.
When Colin's voice came on, he took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
"That boy ate at my table," he said.
"I know."
"I fed him a pork chop and he said it was the best he'd ever had."
"Hal."
"I'm done. I'm just saying it for the record."
I laughed, which I hadn't expected, and then my eyes stung and I was crying into a bologna sandwich.
He let me.
He rested a hand on my head for a second, as he had when I was nineteen and my first design failed.
When I could breathe again, I took out my phone and showed him the text.
Read page nine of the folder.
"Who sent that?"
"I don't know. It's not a number I have."
"Then read it."
I put the black folder under the work lamp and turned past the seven assignments, every signature line still blank.
Page nine wasn't an assignment.
It was a single paragraph in small type, with a signature line and my name typed under it.
I, Melina Hollin, acknowledge that my actions on October 25 caused the collision and my sister Elora's injuries.
I accept full responsibility.
Below that, in a smaller font: Any future claim by the undersigned against the Foundation or its family members is waived.
I read it twice.
Then Hal read it, with his lips moving.
"This isn't a patent paper," he said.
"No."
"That's a confession. They stapled a confession to the back of your life's work."
"She told me to sign and nothing would change." I heard how small my voice was. "Constance said permanent was only a word."
"So they get your braces and your name on the crash," he said.
"And the next time you say a word about it, that page comes out of a drawer."
I thought of the stage, and four hundred people clapping.
If I had signed, every one of them would have been clapping for a woman who had confessed.
"I almost signed it," I said. "I had the pen uncapped."
"But you didn't."
"Only because I walked into a corridor."
"Doesn't matter why." He pushed the plate toward me again. "You put the pen down."
I picked up my phone and looked at the Foundation's page for the third time that night.
Underneath the clip, they had pinned a new post, a graphic in gold and white.
WALK AGAIN GALA. Saturday, December 6, Playhouse Square. Join us as Elora Hollin takes her first steps, live. Five million dollars pledged.
I held it out to Hal.
He read it slowly.
"First steps," he said. "That's six weeks from now."
"They're going to stand her up in front of the cameras and call it a miracle."
"And take five million in donations for it."
"And I'll be in the front row," I said.
"Either I signed my confession, or I'm the one who pushed her out of her chair."
Hal sat down on the stool across from me. It creaked.
"So what do you want to do?"
I looked at the black folder.
"I want her to take those steps," I said. "Right on that stage, with every camera on her."
I wanted everyone to see exactly who was walking.
"That'll take more than a voice memo."
"I know."
"Colin was on the phone with her tonight. Colin knew. Who else knew?"
"Somebody did." I held up the phone.
"Somebody texted me a page number at midnight and didn't want Elora to see me read it."
Hal looked at me for a long moment.
"Then we find out who," he said. "Tomorrow. Go to bed."
I lay down on the cot with the folder against my ribs and the shop lights off.
The lathe ticked as it cooled.
I was almost asleep when someone knocked on the side door, three times, soft and careful.
Hal was already on his feet, holding a wrench.
I opened the door a few inches on the chain.
A tall man in navy scrubs stood under the security light with his phone in his hand.
It was Elora's nurse.
He had come out here in the middle of the night.
For the first time in two years, Doran looked me straight in the eye.
