Chapter 24: Crowned by the Moon
"Yes," I said.
Corwin let out a laugh that broke in the middle, and he lifted me clean off the step.
"Careful," I said. "My shoulder."
"Sorry. Sorry."
He set me down and kissed me, and the lantern swung in his hand and threw light across the open doors.
We were married three weeks later, in Pinewatch hall, at the Founding Stone.
The snow had stopped.
The packs came up the mountain in long lines, nine Alphas and every pack that had a name, and the courtyard could not hold them.
Odette stood beside me as my witness, in a gold dress, with her hair down.
Garrick stood behind her in a clean coat, thinner after a month on the north fence, and prouder than I had ever seen him.
My father stood with the elders at the front.
He did not cry, and then he did.
Corwin wore his black coat with no pin.
"I came without a seat," he said, low, as we walked up the aisle.
"You came with a better one."
"Which?"
"Mine."
He grinned, and it was the first time I had seen him look young.
The envoy was waiting at the Stone with his staff.
Beside him, wrapped in a grey shawl and leaning on a stick, stood a tiny white-haired woman I had last seen at the Awakening.
The Moon Elder.
She had come the whole way up the mountain, ill, in the cold, with two attendants holding her elbows.
"Katja Hallam," the Moon Elder said, and her voice was thin and clear. "I owe you a debt."
"You don't owe me anything."
"I do." She straightened. "I wrote your card with my own hand and gave it to you sealed. I watched your mother take it from you. I thought it was not my place to follow."
