Poppy knocked on my dorm room door at nine that night with a glass of lemonade.

My roommate looked at her, then at me, and took her notebook out into the hall without a word.

"I won't stay long," Poppy said.

She sat on the edge of the other bed with her ankles crossed and her eyes huge.

"I know you hate me right now. I wanted to say sorry. I should have told you I saw your card."

"You should have," I said.

"I was scared," she said. "You'd always been so quiet, and I thought if Mom found out, she'd..."

She pressed her lips together.

"She'd what?"

"She'd make you share it," Poppy whispered. "The way she makes you share everything."

It was a strange thing to hear her say.

It was almost true.

I held the lemonade and did not drink it.

"Why did you stay behind?" I said.

"To tell you something," she said. "I don't think you're safe here."

"From who?"

"From the King."

She said it so gently.

"I heard them in the throne hall," Poppy said. "The doors are thin. I know what the clerk read."

My hand tightened around the glass.

"I know you didn't mean to," she said. "I know you thought you were applying to school. But Nessa, I know what Dad says about the Crown at the elders' table."

"What about it?"

"The Crown hasn't had a silver wolf in three hundred years. Do you know what they do with them?"
