Chapter 5: Her Chair
The Marchesi house sat behind a white wall at the end of a road lined with palms.
I walked up the drive at eight o'clock on Friday in the black dress I'd bought for graduation, with my own money in my own bag.
At the gate a man in a gray suit checked a list on a tablet.
"Name?"
"Renata Ostuni."
He scrolled down and frowned.
"Miss Ostuni is already inside."
"Then I'm the second one," I said.
He looked at me for a long moment. Then he stepped aside and spoke into the cuff of his sleeve.
I crossed the marble hall alone.
There was music somewhere ahead, and a smell of garlic and lilies, and my shoes were loud on the floor.
The dining room doors stood open.
Sixty people sat at a table laid with gold-rimmed plates. At the head sat an old man with white hair and a heavy, quiet face, who could only be the Don.
On his right, in a long gold gown, sat my sister.
Her place card read Renata Ostuni.
My father sat beside her, and my mother beside him, and Tommy at the far end with a dinner roll in each hand.
The room went quiet in rings, starting with the people nearest the door.
Lucrezia saw me and dropped her fork.
"Papa," she said, and her voice shook. "That's her. That's the girl from the city."
My father stood.
"Don Marchesi, forgive me. This girl has been calling my house for a week," he said. "She's from the neighborhood. She's obsessed with my family."
"I'm his daughter," I said.
"She doesn't know us," my mother said.
