They Gave Me a Check at Twelfth Night, So I Took Their Mardi Gras novel · Chapter 19 of 32

Chapter 19: Slow Water

Maurice Villere did not die at the Krewe Ball.

He sat down hard on a gilt chair at the Queen's table with the paste crown in his lap.

A doctor from table nine got two fingers on his throat, and the Captain waved him off and called it indigestion.

They took him out by the stage door on a gurney with an oxygen mask, and the paramedics kept their faces carefully blank.

By midnight the story had gone around the city.

By one, a nurse at Touro told a friend of the oldest queen's driver the news.

The Captain was resting, with his pressure up.

His heart sound.

I heard it on the Marie Odile with a blanket around my shoulders.

"He'll live," Gaspard said, hanging up. "He's embarrassed. They say he's asked for the television to be taken out of the room."

"Good."

"You don't feel any pity?"

"No."

I meant it, and I was a little frightened by how much.

The cabin was dim, with the stove low.

I had spent the whole evening in a dress with a hundred hooks, in front of twelve hundred people.

I wanted to put my head down on something that wasn't a pillow.

Gaspard stood at the galley with his back to me, making coffee nobody was going to drink.
