Chapter 25: Masks Down

The men holding my arms looked at the float.

I felt their grip loosen before they decided to loosen it.

"Put her down," said a voice from the Villere float, a woman's voice, hoarse and plain.

It was the maid.

She stood at the rail of the big gilt barge in the green-and-gold satin the family made its household wear for the parade.

She was a small woman of fifty with gray in her braid, and she had worked in the Prytania house for twenty-two years.

In six of them she had brought me tea at four in the morning without being asked.

"Put Miss Clem down," she said. "Or I'll come over there."

The men set my feet on the gravel.

One of them said, "Sorry, ma'am," and I nodded, because I knew he meant it.

I smoothed the taffeta.

My hands were shaking, and I let them.

"I asked nobody for anything," I said, loudly, to the yard. "I came to take my seat. I'll stand where I'm told."

"You'll go, is what you'll do," Maurice said.

His voice had risen to a thin crack.
