Chapter 29: Sunday
Clem's POV
I broke the black wax with my thumbnail standing on the deck of the Marie Odile in a man's shirt.
The letter was one sheet, written in ink, in the thin upright hand of a woman who had learned penmanship from nuns.
My dear Clementine,
The board met on Friday.
Maurice has resigned the captaincy for his health.
Hortense has resigned her chair, for hers.
Nobody voted.
They simply did not come.
The doubloon is yours.
It is not a trophy.
It is the krewe's promise to the city, and I want you to keep it where it can be seen.
I enclose nothing else. You have been given enough envelopes.
Come when you have eaten something. Bring the sailor. I shall be in my chair.
I read it twice and handed it to Gaspard.
He read it once, slowly, with his lips moving on "the sailor."
"I'm a pilot," he said.
"She knows what you are."
"She's ninety-one."
"She knows exactly what you are."
