Chapter 18: Halyard

"Nine days," I said.

"Nine days," Damon agreed. "I'd start packing that little overnight bag."

I took out my phone and dialed in front of him.

Noah answered on the first ring.

"Can Halyard see us tomorrow?" I said.

"I'll make them," Noah said. "What did he do?"

"Bring your father's agreement," I said. "And your good shirt. We're out of time to be polite."

Damon leaned on the doorframe, amused, listening to every word.

"Put me on speaker," Noah said.

I did, and held it up between us.

"Damon," Noah said. "Whatever you just did, thank you. Halyard hates being rushed. It makes them mean."

Damon's smile thinned.

I walked past him into the hall with Dad's appointment book under my arm.

Behind me my mother still hadn't turned from the window.

Halyard Partners had the thirty-first floor of a glass tower in downtown Houston, all pale wood and union posters framed.

The partner who met us was in her sixties, with cropped white hair and reading glasses pushed up on her head.

She'd run a hotel workers' local for twenty years before she ran money.

She didn't offer coffee.

"I've read your file," she said, sitting down across from us. "I've got twenty minutes. Make them count."

"The Bellweather's worth twice the loan," I said. "Give us the time to prove that."
