They Gave My Wedding to My Brother, Now They Need Me novel · Chapter 19 of 24

Chapter 19: Conference Room

The conference room on the fourth floor had a long oval table and a pitcher of water nobody touched.

Trevor sat at the head of it in a wheelchair, with a blanket over his knees and Brooke beside him.

She held his hand under the table and he let her.

The transplant coordinator sat to his right with a thick file.

The hospital's lawyer sat to his left, a young man in a dark suit who had not yet said a word.

My mother came in last, alone, still in her black coat.

The pastor and her sister had stayed in the lobby.

She looked around the table and did not hide her contempt.

"Who invited the girl?" she said, meaning Hannah.

"I did," Trevor said.

"This is a family matter."

"It's a medical one. Sit down, Mom."

She sat across from me.

The coordinator opened the file.

"We're here because Mr. Trevor Kettering has asked to review his transplant plan," she said. "He has asked to speak first."

Trevor straightened.

"I'm withdrawing from the living-donor plan," he said. "Today. All of it."

"Trevor," my mother said.

"I haven't finished." He looked at the coordinator. "I'm told there's a pre-operative appointment tomorrow in my brother's name. I'd like it cancelled."

"It's cancelled," the coordinator said. "We cancelled it this morning, when Mr. Miles Kettering's counsel wrote to us."

My mother's face did not move.

"He's lying," she said. "Miles volunteered. He told me himself."

"When?"

"In September."

"What did he say?"

"That he wanted to help his brother."

"Mrs. Kettering," the coordinator said, "my records show you scheduled the workup and picked up the results yourself. Your son was told it was an annual physical."
