Chapter 20: The Front Pew

The church was full by ten on Saturday.

It had a tall white ceiling and long wooden pews.

Three hundred people in their best clothes turned to look at the door every time it opened.

I stood at the front in a borrowed suit, to the left of my brother.

Trevor had asked me himself.

"You're the best man," he'd said on the phone. "I mean it. Nobody else has earned it."

He was thin in his gray tuxedo, and he had let Brooke tie his tie.

She came down the aisle in a plain ivory dress on her mother's arm. She wore no veil.

Her sponsors were gone. She had said so to the pastor, flatly, an hour earlier, and added that she would be marrying Trevor anyway.

My mother sat in the front pew on the left.

She wore a navy hat and a smile, and she had her sister on one side and the pastor's wife on the other.

I had not looked at her once.

The ceremony began in quiet sunlight.

The pastor read about patience and kindness.

Trevor said his promises in a low, steady voice.

Brooke said hers and her voice shook on the word sickness and she kept going.

Then the pastor smiled at the pews.

"If anyone knows a reason these two should not be joined," he began.

My mother stood.

She did it gracefully, with a hand on the pew in front of her.

"Not a reason," she said. "A prayer."

A rustle went through the church.

"Forgive me, Pastor. I'd like to ask this congregation to pray for my son Trevor." She turned, so that the whole room could see her face. "He's very sick. Many of you know how sick. He needs a kidney and there's one person alive who can give it. His own brother."
