Chapter 32: The First Harvest
He didn't say anything for a long time.
He just kept his hand where I'd put it, flat and warm, as if he was afraid the news would get away.
Then he put his face down against my shoulder, there on the hill in front of my mother's stone, and his whole back shook.
"Everard?"
"I'm all right."
"You're crying on a duchess."
"I'm crying on my wife," he said, muffled. "It's allowed. I checked."
I held his head and looked at the lake and let him.
When he sat up his eyes were red, and he was smiling like a boy.
"Does Mother know?"
"The cook knows. So your mother knows."
"Ned?"
"Ned will tell everyone in the March by morning, so let's give him till supper."
We told Ned at supper.
He dropped his spoon.
"A baby," he said. "A real one?"
"No, Ned. A wooden one."
"Will it be a boy?"
"I don't know."
"If it's a boy, I'll teach him the spear. If it's a girl, I'll teach her the spear." He thought about it. "And I'm going to be its uncle. Uncle Ned. I'm going to be the best uncle anyone ever had."
