Chapter 14: What Richard Signed

Ethan's POV

Molly walked past Diane without looking at her, and I followed with the cane tapping on the marble.

I had it in my hand on purpose.

Everyone in that house had a picture of me, and tonight the picture was useful.

At the dining room door Molly turned and gave me a smile I would have believed from across a ballroom.

"Ten minutes," she said, quietly. "I'm going to sit with my sister."

"I'll find you."

"Don't let her near me."

"I won't."

She went in to Sylvie, and Diane went in after her, bright and unhurried, with a hand already reaching for someone's arm.

I did not go in.

I went out through the garden doors to the terrace, because the doctor had left the table before the dessert and I wanted to see where he had gone.

He was at the far end by the hedge with a phone at his ear, in the light of the kitchen window.

He thought the glass doors behind him were shut.

"No, she's refused tomorrow's draw," he said. "It doesn't matter. The hospital has her chart from the first night. Mrs. Ashcroft has signed the family consent."

A pause.

"The patient's signature? That is being arranged. Mrs. Ashcroft says she'll sign by Friday, one way or another."

I stood in the dark with the cane in my left hand and my right hand in my pocket.

"No, the husband doesn't know," the doctor said. "He signs what he's given. Tell the surgeon eight o'clock."

I stepped into the light.

He turned, and his face did a number of things at once.
