My father boarded ships for a living, and he did it at six in the morning at the end of the town pier.

I waited there in my green coat with Tiernan two steps behind me.

The pilot boat sat low in the water with its engine running.

Four deckhands in orange gloves were coiling line, and a harbormaster in a yellow slicker stood by the ladder with a mug.

Cora's number had read 41 at breakfast, and mine said 41 in the side mirror of the truck.

"Kiddo," my father said when he saw me.

His whole face went soft and worried.

"You shouldn't be out here in this wind. Go back to Winifred, and I'll come by after my run."

"No," I said.

He stopped with one boot on the ladder.

"I have one wish for you," I said. "It's not number forty-one. It's smaller than that."

"Anything."

"Stop saying after."

The harbormaster looked up from his mug.

"I don't..." my father said.

"You've said it to me half a dozen times since I got home. After the ceremony. After the weekend. After the gala. After the hundred days." I kept my voice level, though my chest was tight. "I have forty-one left, Dad. There's no after."

"Your mother's looking into the specialists."

"Mom booked a man in Boston for the ninth of December."

He went gray.

"That's three days after zero," I said. "You've known that for a week."
