Chapter 14: Quiet

The old woman put on her coat without being asked.

"I'll be at my sister's," she said. "Don't set the kettle on the stove without water in it."

She took the lamp, then put it back.

Then she took Dafydd by the sleeve and pulled him out of the door with her.

Olwen sat down at my mother's table.

She looked at the silver cup, and she did not touch it.

"So that's what it looked like," she said. "I was twelve feet away and I never saw it clearly."

"Tell me what you saw."

"I will. I'd like to say first what I came for."

She folded her hands on the oilcloth.

She looked tired, and old, and the polish had gone out of her.

"I came home to win him back," she said. "I'll say it plainly. I loved him for a hundred and fifty years, and I walked out of this valley the morning after the bond tore without asking one question. I told myself for twenty-four years that he'd cut me loose."

"Did you believe it?"

"Every day. It was the only way to stand up." She breathed in. "Then I saw the mark on your wrist."

"What did you see that night?"
