Chapter 14: Next Sunday

Miles's POV

I got to Pinewater at half past five and walked in against the crowd.

Families were leaving with sunburned kids on their shoulders and prize animals under their arms.

The log flume was at the back, past the closed funnel cake stand.

She was in the third row, alone, with her gray jacket folded on the seat beside her.

She stood up when she saw me.

She didn't come over. She stayed on her side of the little metal rail.

"You came," she said.

"I came to hear it. All of it, from you."

"Okay."

I sat down in the second row, with my back to her.

It was the seat I'd had on my birthday.

I heard her sit down behind me.

"I followed Trent here because his calendar said conference," she said. "I'd been tracing the Larkspur payments for a month. I needed to know who he was spending them on."

"You found out."

"I found out in the front row. Three women, and he never stopped smiling."

"And me."

"And you. I watched him turn around and look at you soaking wet. I've seen that look before. He gives it to waiters."

I said nothing.

"You canceled the passes at the gate. Nobody in that circle had done anything in two years but take. I thought, that man can get me inside."

Her voice was steady, and it made me angrier than shaking would have.

"At the car I told myself it was a plan. At Pearl's I told myself it was still a plan."

"And in my bed?"

"In your bed I stopped lying to myself and kept lying to you." She breathed in. "That's the part I'm sorriest for. I knew by Wednesday I couldn't tell you without losing you, and I picked the lie."
