Chapter 15: The Signature
The conference room at the clinic has a glass wall onto the waiting room.
At eight o'clock on Monday, every patient in it could watch me sit down.
The director sat at the head of the table with the two partners who own the building.
The complaint lay in front of her, one page, printed.
"It says you billed an insurer for twelve sessions one patient never attended," the director said. "It says you kept the cash she paid at the front desk."
"I've treated her for her shoulder since August."
"I know. I've seen her chart." She didn't look happy. "But it's signed, Miles. And a lawyer sent it, with a request for your license review."
At the far end of the table, a man in a good suit folded his hands.
He had introduced himself as counsel for the complainant.
Beside him, in the chair nobody had offered him, sat Trent.
He wore a navy blazer and a pained, kind face.
"I'm only here as a friend," Trent said. "The patient is a neighbor of my mother's. She came to me because she was afraid to come to you."
I looked at him across the table.
He looked back at me without a flicker.
"You don't have a neighbor in this town," I said.
"Mr. Hendry," the lawyer said, "please."
"Is she here?" the director asked.
"She's too upset," the lawyer said. "She asked to be spared this."
"She's on my schedule at eight thirty," the director said. "She's in the waiting room now."
The lawyer's mouth moved.
The director stood, opened the glass door and spoke to the front desk.
Two minutes later, the old woman came in on her cane, in her good coat, with her left arm held close against her ribs.
