Chapter 4: The Wrong Doctor
On Saturday night Beom-su drove them to Itaewon, and it was the first time Do-hyun had been outside in three days.
The private room in Itaewon had a long black table and a paper screen painted with cranes.
A waiter set down eleven dishes and left at a run.
At the far end sat a broad man in a cream suit with a purple bruise swelling shut one eye.
Beside him, at the very edge of his chair, sat a lean man in wire glasses and a rumpled white coat over blue scrubs.
The lean man held a pair of steel chopsticks pointed at the broad man's throat.
"I'll say it again," he said. "I'm a doctor. I have a night shift. There are patients who will die while you pour me wine."
"Doc," the broad man said, grinning around the bruise. "Eat the beef. It's wonderful."
"I'll eat the beef when I'm released."
"You can't be released. You're hungry," Rae-won said.
"That is not a legal argument!"
Do-hyun stopped in the doorway, and for the first time in four days he wanted to laugh.
"Hwang Rae-won," Woo-jin said, pulling out a chair. "This is mine. Chae Do-hyun. Do-hyun, this is the idiot."
"Charmed," Rae-won said, and winced at his own eye. "And that is my guest, Dr. Bae Jun-ho. Doc, say hello."
"I'll say hello to a lawyer."
The doctor looked at Do-hyun, and his eyes went from the bandaged finger to the faded bruise on his jaw.
The doctor's expression softened.
"You're the other one," he said.
"Which other one?"
"The wrong one. Six hundred and fifty million went through an account in my name in Guro, and Rae-won's people found me in a hospital car park. They have been very sorry about it for about nine hours. You?"
"Seven hundred. Guro, too," Do-hyun said.
"Same bank," Jun-ho said, and set the chopsticks down very slowly. "Same branch. Someone is using names."
