Chapter 21: Keir's POV

Keir's POV

The screens stayed black for six hours.

I spent them in the mess tent, in a plastic chair at the end of the long table.

The production committee argued around me, and I kept my hands in my lap.

I had made one promise behind the stage, and I meant to keep it.

I was recused. I could not touch the override.

"Mr. Halverson," the producer said, for the fourth time. "You are the only one who can restore the broadcast."

"I'm not the only one who can vote."

She stared at me.

I took the steel key from around my neck, on its cord, and I laid it on the table.

"Rule nine," I said. "If the owner is recused, a majority of the committee can take the key and use the override. You don't need me. You need a majority."

"On what ground?"

"Play them the tape."

Ben stood up from the corner and set his tablet in the middle of the table.

It was the recording from the beam camera, the Brantleys' lawyer in the lodge chair, easy and smiling.

*Your father cashed it, Mr. Halverson. And Mrs. Brantley wrote the first check herself.*

Nobody at that table said a word until it ended.

The producer looked at the key, and then at the five other faces.

"All in favor," she said.

Five hands went up, and then, slowly, her own.
