Chapter 9: The Folder

Corina's POV

Keely knocked on my door at nine-thirty that night.

I knew her knock.

Two quick taps and then one softer one.

I opened the door on the chain.

She stood in the hall in a rain jacket, with her hair down and no makeup on, holding her phone in both hands.

"Please," she said. "Five minutes."

"You can have three."

I took the chain off and she came in and didn't sit.

She stood in my kitchen next to the counter where she had left the apron.

"Aunt Bernice pays me four hundred dollars a month," she said.

I didn't say anything.

"She started three years ago, when my lease ended. She said it was to help with rent. Then last month she asked me to stay with you for a few weeks and notice things."

"Notice things."

"Who you talk to. What you buy. What's in your savings account."

"And you did."

"Every week." Her voice shook. "She called every Sunday. I told her when your paycheck came and what the balance was."

"You looked at my bank app."

"When you were in the shower. I told her everything."

I thought of her folding my towels.

I thought of the spice rack.

"Why are you telling me now?"

"Because of today." Keely wiped her face with her sleeve. "I was at the house when she came back from the clinic. She sat at the kitchen table with the pie still in her arms and she wasn't even upset. She was working out what to do next. Corina, she was doing arithmetic."

"What did she say?"

"She said, 'He'll come around. They all come around.' And then she asked me to find out if you had a copy of the video on a computer or just on your phone."

"What did you tell her?"

"That you only have it on your phone."
