Chapter 11: The Champion's Price

"Tonight, after the fight," Joaquin said, and put his hand on my shoulder for one second.

It was heavy and warm, and I did not know what to do with it.

"What fight?" I said.

He nodded at the stairs.

A phone was ringing in Beto's pocket.

Beto answered, listened, and went pale around the mouth.

"It's Tomas," he said. "He says your mother wants to make a deal."

By noon the whole city knew the terms.

Renata had announced them herself, on camera, in a charcoal suit, standing in front of Warehouse 9 with a crowd of reporters.

"I am a mother," she said, "and I want to end this the way my daughter understands."

She had smiled at the lens.

"One fight. Tonight, in her own cage. If Dalia wins, I cancel the demolition and the building stays with her trainer for ten years. If she loses, she signs her grandmother's shares over to the family and comes home."

"And if she refuses?" a reporter shouted.

"Then the bulldozers come back Monday."

The reporters roared.

Tomas stood behind her with his head bowed.

I watched the clip on Beto's phone and understood the trap.

Renata could not lose in public.

Win or lose, the fight was on camera, and if I turned it down, I was a coward who let thirty people lose their beds.

"You don't have to do it," Joaquin said.

"I know."
