They Made Me Run On a Broken Leg. Don Had My Back novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: By Choice

The two detectives were sitting on the living room sofa with their jackets folded beside them.

Luca stood in the kitchen door with a dish towel on his shoulder and nothing at all on his face.

"Ms. Keane?" the older detective said, and stood up. "Thank God. Your fiancé told us you were taken off Fulton Street."

"Is that what he told you?"

"By a man in a grey suit."

I looked at Damiano, who stood just inside the door with his hands in his pockets.

"That man," I said, "carried me out of the road."

The younger detective wrote something down.

I took a breath and sat on the arm of the sofa, because my leg was shaking too hard to stand.

"I'm here by choice," I said. "Nobody took me. Nobody's keeping me. I walked into this house, and I'm staying until my doctor takes the frame off."

"You understand your fiancé reported you kidnapped," the older one said.

"I understand he lied to you."

"Ma'am."

"Fulton Street has a bus stop at the corner, and a teenager standing at it with a phone." I said it slowly. "At noon yesterday his mother stopped her car, opened my door and put me out on the pavement in front of two SUVs. Then they drove away. Ask for that video."

The older detective stopped writing.

"His own mother?" the younger one said.

"Bernadette Hourigan. She took my crutches out of the car and handed them to me."

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Luca looked at the ceiling.

"And Mr. Corvino?" the older detective said. "What's your relationship with him?"

I thought about it.
