Chapter 10: Play the Video

Spencer's mother invited me to lunch at the Langdon family club, and I went because I wanted to see her face.

Jasper had a meeting across town.

"I'll be there in an hour," he said, kissing my temple at the door.

"Public?" I asked.

"Habit," he said.

That was a lie, and we both knew it.

The club had marble floors, a string quartet, and forty women at white-clothed tables.

Spencer's mother sat at the head of the biggest one.

She was sixty, thin, with diamonds at her throat and a smile that stopped at her teeth.

"Rosalind, darling. Sit. We were just talking about you."

Every head turned.

I sat.

"I understand your husband works with his hands," she said.

"He does a lot of things with his hands," I said.

A woman choked on her tea.

Spencer's mother recovered quickly.

"How wonderful. I do hope the club's staff won't confuse him for one of the waiters. It happens to the new people, you know. They stand so near the bar."

A few women laughed politely.

"And you, dear. That color." She flicked a finger toward my dress, a deep plum wrap that I loved. "So brave. I could never. I think a woman has a duty to her figure. Spencer says you were always so lovely, before."

"Before what?"

"Before you stopped trying."

The quartet kept playing.

My face stayed completely still.

I put down my fork, slowly.

"I'm going to say this once, in a room where you can hear it."

The table went quiet.

"Your son grabbed my wrist on a public sidewalk and called me a fat girl. He told me a billionaire wanted me for a month. He did it in front of a doorman and a woman with a dog. She filmed it. I asked her to send me a copy."
