Chapter 9: The Woman in the Grey Dress

Jasper's POV

I met Camille at a coffee shop on Madison, in a corner booth, with my back to the wall.

I always sit with my back to the wall.

She was already there, in a cream sweater, with a latte and an anxious little smile.

"Thank you for coming," she said. "I didn't want Roz to know I was worried."

"About what?"

"Spencer." She wrapped both hands around her cup. "He's not going to let this go. His father wants the Abbott name. Spencer says Roz embarrassed them, and he means to make her sorry."

"Does he."

"I can find out what he's planning. I'm close to him. He talks to me."

I watched the sapphire ring on her right hand turn slowly as she spoke.

"Why would he talk to you?"

"Because I'm the harmless sister." She laughed softly. "Nobody guards anything around me."

That was almost true.

I have seen two thousand people try to sell me a story across a bar, and the best ones always include one true fact.

"I'd be grateful for anything you can find," I said.

She brightened.

"And Jasper. Please. Don't call my father's loan. Just until Christmas. He's not well."

"I'll consider it."

"You're so good for her."

She said it warmly.

She stood, touched my arm and left, and the bell over the door rang behind her.
