Chapter 22: The Price

"What do you want?" I said.

I had pulled my dress on over my head and stood in the grass with Matthias behind me, buttoning his shirt.

Tomas did not look at the two of us.

He kept his eyes on the shovel leaning against my father's stone.

"Not forgiveness," he said.

"I know I can't have it.

"I want to be told what it costs."

"Come to the church hall tomorrow," I said.

"Noon.

"Bring Peter."

The pierogi sale fell on the second Saturday of September that year, which was the next day.

I had not planned it.

The women of the parish had been up since four, with flour to the elbows.

The line ran out the hall's door and down the steps.

The Culm Bank pack had taken the back tables, and a good number of Black Diamond had come as well, wolves in their church coats, buying potato and cheese by the dozen.

Nobody sat with anybody.

Everybody was in the same room.

I stood in the church kitchen with my sleeves rolled up, boxing pierogi, with the steel counter at my back.
