Chapter 13: Thirty-Six
Nate closed the checkbook on his thumb so he wouldn't lose the page.
"Get your dad," he said to Leah. "He should be in the room for this."
Leah went to the morning room without a word.
Nate walked into the parlor and laid the checkbook open on the coffee table, on top of Barbara's bill.
Her hand went to her pearl earring, and then she made it come back down to her lap.
"Those are private papers," she said.
"They're my grandfather's," Nate said. "And your name is on every one."
Leah wheeled Frank in and set his brake beside the fireplace.
The lawyer stood in the doorway in her wet raincoat and didn't come any farther.
Nate turned the carbons one by one, so everyone could see.
The first one was October 2023, and then came November, and then December.
Every one was dated the first of the month, and every one said the same four lines in his grandfather's capitals.
When he reached the end, he counted out loud, and nobody stopped him.
"Thirty-six," he said. "Six thousand dollars, thirty-six times. That's two hundred and sixteen thousand dollars, Barbara."
