"That's my mail," Barbara said.
"It's addressed to you," Nate said. "It's about me."
Leah's sister had come up behind her mother in the hall and stopped there, in her socks.
Barbara looked at her other daughter, and then at the desk drawer on the rug.
"You let them in."
"Dad needed his wallet, Mom."
Barbara took her coat off slowly and laid it over a kitchen chair.
Then she sat down at the kitchen table, the one Frank had built out of a cherry tree from the back lot in 1994.
She folded her hands on it.
"Well," she said. "Sit, if you're going to stay."
Nobody sat.
Leah stood up from the rug with Frank's wallet in one hand and the empty envelopes in the other.
"You told the whole city you never got a letter," she said. "You swore it."
"I swore I handed him the money," Barbara said. "The letter never came up."
"Mom."
"Fine." Barbara looked straight at Nate. "I read it. Of course I read it. I read it right here at this table."
"Your father was sitting where you're standing, and I read it out loud, because I thought it was funny."
