Chapter 22: Two Names
The woman at Victor's supper called me May Palfrey.
Victor began correcting her before I could open my mouth.
"Harper," he said.
"She uses Harper."
The woman looked at the two of us.
"But you're her father," she answered.
"Yes," he said.
He didn't try to make that an argument for owning my name.
Audrey stood beside me holding a glass of water.
"I'm Audrey Palfrey," she told the woman.
"May's sister."
The woman smiled with the puzzled politeness people use while rearranging something in their heads.
I introduced Hallie as our friend before anybody could assign her a smaller place.
She'd come because we wanted her there.
She was wearing the green jacket she liked and ordinary clean shoes.
Caroline joined us carrying an empty glass.
"We're pleased you could come," she told Hallie.
Hallie thanked her and asked where she'd bought her walking shoes.
