Chapter 19: A Door With Two Handles
Caedrin arrived at supper and counted thirty candles before he said good evening.
"Thirty-one," said Seravelle from the window seat.
"One is on the curtain rod."
"I know," he said.
"I am going to move it."
She had spent the afternoon making her sitting room into a scene.
Candles stood on the mantel, the bookshelves, the arms of two chairs, and a small tower of saucers.
Her copper hair hung loose over one shoulder, and she held a book she was not reading.
She had practiced the angle of her head for most of an hour.
Caedrin put his basket on the table, took the candle off the curtain rod, and set it in a bowl of water.
"I brought supper from the kitchens," he said.
"The cook sent the onion soup again."
"I have planned the evening in three parts," said Seravelle.
"Part one is called Languor."
She turned her face toward the window and rested her cheek on her fist.
Caedrin waited politely until her fist slid and the book hit the floor.
