Chapter 23: Rhodri

The Warden turned the great page.

It was a heavy leaf of three-hundred-year-old vellum, and it went over on its chain with a sound that carried to the back wall.

"Page four," he said. "As I told the Crown's daughter at dawn."

He laid a torn page of the gate-book on the lectern beside the great book.

It was the page with Gwyn Treharne's name on it.

"The older Penhallow tore this from my gate-book," said the Warden. "A groom found it in his coat this morning."

"I wrote that line myself, before term, on the Crown's word."

"I have known who she was since before she crossed my gate."

He read it in his dry old voice.

"Any lord who sets his name to a claim upon the Crown's line without the Crown's word has forged the Crown's seal."

"The forger shall surrender his hearth, his claim and his heirs' standing to the Crown, to be disposed of at its will."

A silence fell.

"That," said Rhodri Penhallow, "is a dead law."

"It has been read twice in three hundred years," said the Warden. "Both times it was enforced."

"By whom?"

"By the Crown."

Every head turned to the dais.

My father had risen.

I had not thought he could.

He stood out of the folding chair with both hands braced on my brother's arm.

He was a tall white skeleton in a grey blanket, and he looked down the Hall at Rhodri Penhallow as he had looked at men when I was a child.
