Chapter 14: The Back Row

Tamar's POV

Corbin Hall has a lecture room on the second floor that seats six hundred, and at nine at night it is the emptiest place in Ashmont.

I stood on the stage in my cardigan with a piece of chalk.

Behind me was a wall of blackboard forty feet wide.

I had been writing on it for an hour.

The Wick proof takes eleven boards.

I'd written it at seventeen on the back of a pharmacy receipt roll, on the bus, in a bad winter.

I could still do it with my eyes shut.

What I couldn't do was decide how to begin.

I was either going to stand on this stage on November sixth and let my uncle take a bow, or I was going to walk out of the audience and take my name back.

I hadn't said that out loud.

I'd said nothing out loud for three days except to Cleo, who made me eat toast.

The door at the back of the hall opened, and I did not turn around.

Footsteps came down the aisle, and stopped.

A seat creaked in the very last row.

I knew whose.

I kept writing.

I wrote a line, an integral, a bound, and my hand didn't shake.

I wrote a second line, and the person in the last row didn't speak.

At ten, I put down the chalk and turned off the lights over the stage.
