Chapter 7: Say It Out Loud

In the car Dane held the wheel with both hands and said nothing for the length of Chestnut Hill.

It was a gray hatchback that belonged to the rowing club.

I watched the streetlights come up one by one and counted them.

"Ask me," he said at the bottom of the hill.

"Your grandfather told me to." I said.

"I know." he said.

"So I'm asking."

"Rule two," Dane said.

I turned in my seat.

"You're hiding behind a rule I wrote."

"I'm asking you to let me." His voice was low. "It's mine to tell, Tamar. I will. I'm not hiding it to be cruel, and I'm not hiding it because I want something from you. If I say it now, you'll have two enemies to fight instead of one, and you've only got the one lecture."

"Which lecture?"

"The one in November. Wick's." He shot me a look. "The sacks on the kitchen table. The whole department is talking about it."

I should have been angry, and I was, but there was also something else.

He had known about the sacks, and he had never once looked at them.

"You think I'm A. J. Wick," I said.

"I think you can do things with a pencil that I have never seen anyone do," Dane said. "And I think your uncle took a page from your room."

I didn't answer.

He didn't push.

That was how it was left, on a Sunday night, in a rowing club car.

On Monday the sun came out and the boy at the union said the wrong thing.

The student union atrium has a glass roof and sixty round tables, and at lunch, on a Monday, every table is full.

Cleo and I had a table by the pillar.

Dane was in line at the pasta bar, a hundred feet away, with his tray, being invisible.

Four rowers sat two tables over from us.

One of them was the boy from the loading dock.

He didn't lower his voice.
