Elias put his hand over the trackpad.
"You don't have to watch it."
"Yes, I do."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he took his hand away.
Nico got up and went to stand at the window.
I pressed play.
The picture was dark and shaking.
Rain streaked across a windshield.
The phone was propped on a dashboard, pointed at a curve of wet road.
Headlights came around the bend.
A silver car.
My mother's car.
I'd sat in the back of it every day of my childhood with my ballet bag on my knees.
A man's voice spoke from behind the phone.
"Come on, Cathy. Come on."
I knew that voice.
It had read me bedtime stories after she died.
The silver car went through the guardrail, exactly as Elias had told me.
I kept my eyes open anyway.
The camera lurched.
The man was getting out, carrying the phone.
Rain hammered the lens.
He walked to the broken rail and pointed the phone down the bank.
The silver car lay on its side in the weeds.
