Chapter 24: The Gate
Jonas went down on one knee in the gravel of the mill yard, in front of two hundred people.
He did it badly.
His hat fell, and his knee landed in a puddle, and the ring box would not open until he used both thumbs.
"I wasn't going to ask until you were ready," he said.
"I know."
"I have been ready since the day my father died. I just didn't think I was allowed."
"Jonas."
"Let me finish."
I let him.
He held up the plain gold band, and the stone in it caught the morning.
"This was my mother's. I took it before the old man could sell it. I'm not buying anything with it. You own forty percent of a mill and you can walk across a room, and you don't need a thing from me."
"That's true."
"So you can say no, and I'll be at the foot of the stairs tomorrow anyway, and the day after that. Mara Eckhart. Will you marry me?"
The yard had gone completely quiet.
I looked at the man on one knee in the mud.
He was a man who had once said nothing, and now he was saying everything in front of the whole yard.
He had ridden down a mountain at night for me with his hat gone.
I had his whole ledger in my head, the bad lines and the good, and the good ones were longer now.
"Yes," I said.
He let out a sound I had never heard from him.
"I'm saying yes on one condition."
"Name it."
