Chapter 8: The Priest

Odile's POV

I dressed in a hurry and found my boots on the third try.

Seb was already downstairs in jeans and a clean shirt, shoving his hair off his forehead with one wet hand.

He looked at me, and I saw the whole question in his face.

"Stay in your room," he said.

"No."

"Odile."

"He brought a priest to my door, Seb.

"I'll stand where he can see me."

His mouth tightened, and he nodded once.

We went out together onto the long porch in the early light.

My father stood at the foot of the steps in his best pressed shirt, with his feed-store cap in his hands and a face of great concern.

Behind him, in the passenger seat of the white truck, the old priest was climbing down with the help of the door.

Bernadette climbed down from the back, in her navy church dress and her pearls.

"Chère," my father said.

"There she is."

He spread his arms.

I did not go down to him.

"Daddy."

"Father came all the way out to bless the engagement," he said, loud and warm.

"The whole parish is talking.

"We want to put it right.

"It's not good for a girl to be talked about."

"There's no engagement."

"Odile." The priest's voice was soft and cracked.

He had baptized me.

"Your father tells me there's been a misunderstanding."

"Father, there's no misunderstanding.
