Chapter 14: The Third Rule
Dain Korrigan drafted the Deed of Release in the study at the end of the hall, and it took him three nights.
He could only hold a pen while he was in the body.
The body only held him while Idris was within thirty paces.
So Idris had left the bedroom door ajar every night since the Healers' Hall, without a word about it.
Dain sat at the desk in the lamplight and wrote the end of his own marriage.
A husband could release his consort before the Council on Registry day.
The release freed the consort from every clause, every debt and every Korrigan claim, and left him whatever the will gave him.
It was a clean piece of paper.
Dain read it three times and found it very hard to hold.
He had not slept beside Idris since the Hall.
He listened through the open door instead, to a slow breath and a rustle of blankets and, once, a muttered complaint about soup.
If a core had made the choice, then Idris had never had one.
A man who had never been given a choice could not be asked to stay.
