Chapter 20: Bond

Dain Korrigan woke at five, on Tarn, in his own bed, and for a moment did not know what was wrong with him.

Nothing was wrong.

There was a warm line running through his chest, a steady hum under the ribs.

At the end of it, a pillow away, someone was dreaming about toast.

He could feel it.

He could feel the exact shape of the dream: butter going soft, a crust giving, a mouth about to be happy.

The bond had come in the night, a week ago, and he still could not get used to it.

They had flown home from Kesh Station on the second day, with Idris asleep against his shoulder the whole way.

For two years he had been cold from the inside out.

Now he lay on his back in the grey dawn with his hand over his heart, and the whole of him was warm.

The shade was sitting on the foot of the bed, watching Idris sleep.

"Rule two," Dain said under his breath.

"I'm sitting," said the shade.

Since the bite the shade came out only in sleep, and only to look.
