Chapter 22: The Teaching Hall
"Nobody pushes," Idris said. "That's the first rule, and the last."
A hundred students stared up at him from the tiers of the teaching hall.
They wore white coats, and some of them were forty years old.
Every one of them had read about the Marshal's husband in the papers.
He stood on the floor of the round room with a bun in one hand and a piece of chalk in the other.
The wolf lay across his boots.
"The art I use is not a machine," Idris said. "It has no dials."
He tapped his belly with the chalk.
"You sit, and you breathe from here. You wait, and you listen until you can feel where the life has pooled in a body and where it has run dry."
A hand went up in the third row.
"Then you open your palm and let the one flow toward the other," Idris finished.
"That's all?" the student called.
"That's all. It takes about twenty years."
A ripple of laughter went round the tiers.
In the front row, with a notebook open on his knee, Marius Penhallow was writing down every word.
