Chapter 19: The Headland
We went back the way I had left, by water, at slack tide.
Darius rowed.
The skiff slid under the headland with its oars muffled in rags, and the lodge hung over us, black against a sky that had a swollen moon rising behind it.
One more night and it would be full.
Eli sat in the bow with my mother's old umbrella across his knees.
It was the only thing in the boat that looked like a weapon, and he said it made him feel better.
We touched the stone landing without a sound.
The tide gate stood a little open.
Darius stopped with his hand on the iron.
"I locked this," he said.
"Silas has had a day," Eli whispered. "He's not stupid."
"Then he's waiting for us."
"Then we go in anyway," I said. "Silas is sitting in the room where I'm supposed to say yes."
"And he thinks I won't walk through his door."
Darius looked at me for a long moment.
"You don't have to come," he said.
"Don't decide that for me," I said, and walked past him.
The stair rose into the dark.
I held the iron key in my fist, and I heard the three of us breathing on the wet stone.
At the fifth step a light came on above us.
It was a torch, and behind the torch stood men, six of them, packed shoulder to shoulder on the landing at the top.
Every one had white wax in his ears.
Ronan was among them with his cast across his chest, and a knife in his good hand.
"Go back," I said, and it came out of me, low, clear, with the whole of my chest behind it. "Kneel."
Not one of them moved.
They looked at me, and they waited.
"They can't hear you," Ronan said, and he smiled.
It was a terrible smile.
"Silas thought of everything. Come up, little wolf. He wants you in the hall, and he's been generous. He's kept your friend's room."
