Chapter 4: The Youngest

I spun around with the dead phone in my fist.

It was Nico, leaning on the study doorframe with one hand over his mouth.

"Sorry," he said. "I wasn't laughing at you. It's that nobody ever goes through his desk."

"Are you going to tell Silas?"

"Do you want me to?"

I did not know how to answer that, so I said nothing.

Nico came in and shut the drawer with his hip.

"I'm supposed to be down in the courtyard," he said. "Ronan told me to leave you alone up here. I think he wants you to get caught."

"Why?"

"So Silas can put you in the cellar. Ronan thinks you'll be easier if you're scared." He looked at his boots. "I don't think you'd be easier."

He was twenty-four, I remembered.

He had lifted me off the ground in the lot, and now he could not meet my eye.

"Nico, do you think this is right?"

"It's not mine to think about." He said it fast, and he had said it many times before. "Silas raised us. He took us in when our fathers died, all five of us. You do what he says. That's the family."

"Then tell me what he says. What's the Claiming? Exactly."

He hesitated, and I saw him weigh it.

"Come on," I said. "Nine days. I'm going to find out either way. You could be the one who said it plainly."

He let out a long breath.

"The five of us stand with you at the full moon, in the hall. The council comes to watch, the heads of the other families. Silas names the order." He swallowed. "And then you have to say it."
