Chapter 24: Carry Me Up
On the last night of April the lodge was full.
Every room upstairs had a guest in it, and the lounge was loud with a party of skiers who had come for the last of the snow.
The housekeeper was back in her apron.
The cook was back at the stove, and he had banged the soup pot twice at Felix on principle.
The lift ran every morning, and the lift mechanic had stopped checking the cable twice.
I stood at the bottom of the stairs with a stack of clean towels and watched the last guest go up to bed.
Nobody in the valley crossed the street when they saw me anymore.
The bank had kept the loan where it was, and the insurer had written a polite letter of renewal, and Seidl's hotel was a drawing in a drawer in Innsbruck.
I did not think about him much.
The four of them came out of the kitchen one by one.
Tobias had flour on his sleeve from helping the cook.
Stefan was drying a glass with a cloth and talking.
Jonas walked in with a sack of kindling over one shoulder, and Felix followed with a pencil behind each ear.
They stopped when they saw me.
"What?" Stefan said. "Do I have something on my face?"
"No."
"You're staring at us."
"I'm looking at you," I said, "because I've been thinking about the night I came."
They went quiet.
I put the towels down on the bottom step.
"I'd like to hear it again," I said.
Felix pushed his glasses up his nose, slowly.
"Hear what?" he asked.
"What you said on the stairs."
Tobias set down the glass he had taken from Stefan.
"Verena," he said. "We said a lot of things we should never have said."
"I know. I want to hear them anyway. This time, when I know."
