Chapter 13: Fifty-One Percent

I sat down on the kitchen floor in Tobias's shirt and opened the top envelope.

The flap had already been slit, cleanly, with a knife.

Inside was a card with a snowy pine on the front and two sheets of lined paper folded in thirds.

The date at the top was last October, five months before my grandmother died.

I read it with the stove ticking in the next room.

"Tobias, if you are reading this, I am gone and Laurel has the fund," it began.

"Your father and I grew up on the same street in Torrington. Near the end he asked me to look after you and to keep Margaret's hands off what he left you."

"What he left you is fifty-one percent of the voting shares of Thayer Holdings, in a trust with your name on it."

I stopped, and I read that line again.

"Margaret has spent more than the company earns. She will come to Pinegate for money, and the price will be your father's shares. She will sign them over because she thinks I am a silly old woman with savings."

"If she cannot repay, the shares belong to Pinegate, and Pinegate belongs to Laurel."

"Do not ask her for them. Let her choose."

A floorboard creaked behind me.

Tobias stood in the doorway in his jeans, barefoot, looking at the pages in my hand.

"The flap's been cut," I said. "You opened this."

"On December twenty-second."
