Chapter 14: The Front Door

Tobias's POV

I told Laurel where I was going before I went.

It was the first thing I'd said to her in an hour that she didn't answer with silence.

"Margaret's," I said. "I'll tell you everything she says, tonight, with nothing taken out."

She looked at me across the kitchen with her arms folded, still in my shirt.

"Go," she said. "Take your phone."

I had not walked up the front steps of the Ferris Road house in eight years.

I had come up the drive twice a year to read the meters on the gate, and I had never come to the door.

The housekeeper opened it.

She was an old woman who had packed my school lunches, and she put one hand over her mouth and then took it away.

"She's in the study," she said quietly. "Don't let her make you wait."

The hall table was bare.

The Christmas tree was gone, and there was a pale square on the rug where it had stood.

Margaret sat behind my father's desk with a cup of tea and her reading glasses on.

She did not get up.

"Tobias," she said. "You've gotten gray."

"Margaret."

"Sit."

"I'll stand."

She took off the glasses and folded them.

"I'll be plain," she said. "That girl owns a lender and a pledge she doesn't understand, and she's sleeping in your house. You're the only person she listens to."
