Chapter 14: The Pledge Microphone

Clive closed the folder on the steps and looked up at our aunt.

"You filed this yesterday," he said.

"Marigold filed it. I'm her counsel."

"You're my wife's aunt and my former client's sister, and you named a woman who isn't a party."

"She's named as the corespondent." Berenice adjusted her glasses on their chain. "It's a very ordinary pleading, Clive."

He handed the folder to me.

"Keep it," he said. "It's about you."

I turned to the last page.

My sister's signature, round and confident, and beside it the date.

June 12.

Nobody had changed it.

I closed the folder, put it in my mother's box on top of her sheet music, and walked to my car.

Berenice watched me all the way down the drive.

The magazine came out the next Thursday, the morning of the foundation gala.

My Sister Bought My Husband.

Six pages. Marigold on the curved stairs at Briarwood in white, one hand on the banister, looking brave.

The writer called me "the elder Cromwell daughter, a debt investor known in the family as cold."

There was a quote from an unnamed friend. "Iris always wanted what Marigold had."

Odessa read it aloud in my office in a terrible society voice and then dropped it in the shredder.

"Are you going tonight?" she asked.

"I'm a director. Directors sit at the foundation table."

"Wear red," Odessa said. "Cold women wear red."

The Belvedere ballroom had gold ceilings and three hundred donors in black tie.

The Cromwell Foundation paid for summer camps for the children of dockworkers. My mother had started it.

Marigold chaired it now.

She stood at the podium in a pale blue gown with her hair down, and she held the magazine against her chest.

"This year taught me what family means," she said. "And what it doesn't."
